Antique German Mahogany Side Cabinet / Cocktail Cabinet

Antique German Mahogany Side Cabinet / Cocktail Cabinet

This very unusual 19thC cabinet is of fantastic quality. At first it looks like a fairly standard sideboard or cabinet with drawers and cupboards below.

In fact, the top lifts up and locks in place revealing an array of shelves, writing surfaces and a metal lined well.

Beneath the top are a bank of shelves that are held closed with a small brass catch. In the middle there is a writing surface that lifts and locks to the top revealing yet more locking shelves. At either side are more writing surfaces that fold out to create even more surface area.

There are paper charts stuck to each writing surface with German writing, most is too worn to read but what can be read appears to be some form of official register with columns for people’s details. It mentions military subjects so it may be something to do with conscription.

Another suggestion is the cabinet was used for some form of medical use with medical equipment and liquids held in the center well. When not in use everything could be locked away securely in the cupboards, each one having its own different key.

Whatever its origins, it would make a fantastic drinks/ cocktail cabinet either for home or commercial bar.
